CONVERSION OF COLOUR IMAGE TO TONED MONOCHROME IMAGE IN PHOTOSHOP
(with thanks to Simon Allen EFIAP MPAGB)

1. Open colour image of your choice in Photoshop.

2. Select Image/Mode/Lab Color.

3. Open Channels palette: Window/Channels.

4. Click on lightness channel. The lab, a and b channels will be switched off.

5. Select Image/Mode/Grayscale. This will leave only a gray channel in the open palette.

6. Holding down control (Ctrl on your keyboard), click on the thumbnail image in the channels palette.
This will select all pixels between white and mid gray. If you have a version of Photoshop with a Histogram palette,
this will be clearly shown.

7. However, we wish to select those pixels representing black to mid gray. Therefore go to Select/Inverse.

8. Open the layers palette: Window/Layers.

9. Change image back to colour file: Image/Mode/RGB Color.

10. Select Layer/New Fill Layer/Solid Color. A New Layer box will open, click OK. This will open the Color Picker.
Click on a colour of your choice. The exact colour is unimportant at this stage but, if you desire a warm tone,
click on a red part of the spectrum or, if you prefer a cool tone, select a blue part of the spectrum. Once a colour is selected click OK.
Your image will probably look rather washed out at this stage – don’t worry.

11. On the Layers palette, click on the little downward facing arrow in the blending mode window.
This is the box at the top left of the palette which will presently be at ‘normal’.
Click on Multiply from the drop down menu.

12. You now have a toned monochrome image.

13. If you are unhappy with the colour, contrast or tonal quality of the image (or simply wish to experiment),
these can easily be altered.

14. Double click on the coloured thumbnail shown in the uppermost of the two layers in the Layers palette.
This will re-open the Colour Picker. Simply click anywhere on either the large graded colour box
or on the vertical strip spectrum until you achieve the desired result. Click OK.

Voila!.....Thanks, Simon

Workshop Group Annual Competition 2007: theme 'Artistry'

This years competition was won by Peter Pauwels CPAGB with his print
'Rusting Away'

2nd was 'Vine Spirit' from Bernard Morris, and a Peter Pauwels digital file, 'Sentinels' was 3rd.

Our President and judge for the evening
presents Peter with the Trophy

Peter's winning print

'Rusting Away'
"This was a shot of one of the Gormley statues at "Another Place" at Crosby. I made several copies of the main image enlarging, blurring and displacing each and varying the layer opacity to give the impression of the statue gradually wasting away. The top layer was treated with the posterise edges filter to emphasise the rust. A circular gradient radiating from the top left hand corner was also added." Peter

2nd 'Vine Spirit'
by Bernard Morris
"This image was retrieved from a photograph taken under difficult
lighting conditions, strong shadow.
The subject was moving.
The camera was a Canon powershot
pro 1.(1/125 sec @ f3.5)"
Bernard

3rd 'Sentinels'
by Peter Pauwels

MEMBERS' ANNUAL COMPETITION (open subjects)

The Members' Annual Competition of the Southport Photographic Society Digital
Group took place on the evening of Wednesday 10th May 2006. Many varied subjects, as both printed images and digital slides, were entered into this Open
Subjects Competition which was judged by Mr. Tony Myers, FRPS.

With a good all round standard the Judge needed all his experience and skills
to arrive at an outright winner.

The "Digital Creative Competition" Trophy
was awarded to Dianne Owen for her print titled "Incapsulated" which the Judge
determined demonstrated a creative, imaginative and personal use of the digital
photographic medium. Diane had skilfully expressed her individual vision of the
subject to create an image with impact that fully engages the viewer."

Anthony Wray

Dianne Owen receives the trophy from the judge for the evening, Tony Myers FRPS

1st 'Incapsulated'
by Dianne Owen

Incapsulated
This is one of the more complex images created from the set of images that was inspired by The Antony Gormly Sculpture. I didn't plan the image, it evolved. There are several images that preceed Incapsulated that help create what you see as a final image. The background was created but using motion blur on the beach removing the man first. I cut out the man & saved him to his own layer, then created several layers putting the man in various triangles and ended up with the man in the triangle you now see. The first version was a single man. I later want back to the image and cut the background into more triangles to create the diagonal background to fit round the three man triangles. I used the darker lines to produce a clear distinction between the background and the focus in the image. Added an adjustment layer to slightly alter the colour tones in the image. Printed on gloss paper.

Martin died of a heart attack last month and below is a picture of Martin out on a day
of photography with a group of like minded people in a 3D theater
