North Cheshire Competitions 2006

We have won the Digital Print Competition in the last two years, but this year had to settle for fifth place alongside SLIC, who were speaking at Southport Digital Group the very same evening. At North Cheshire, the winners were the hosts themselves, followed by Dumfries CC, Crewe CC, Carluke CC, and then Southport & SLIC. Twenty four clubs entered. The judge, Barry Colquhoun marked out 19, saving his 20 for the top print (from Carluke). Two Southport images scored 19, Gary Parker's 'Girl on a Train', and Derek Openshaw's 'Red Squirrel in Snow', with Derek's 'Snow Bunting' scoring 18. Our other two entries were both accepted in the London Salon, but did not get into the top marks this time.

In the slides, which we have also won in recent years, the judge was Peter Gennard, who eliminated 70 of the 105 slides entered in the first round! Twelve of the twenty one clubs present were therefore out of it by the end of round two. We did reasonably to come sixth along with Wilmslow Guild. Leek CC were first by a distorted margin of 5 points, Wigan 10 were second, Crewe PS and South Manchester equal third, and Chapel CC were one point ahead of us as fifth. Both Trevor Davenport's 'Pushkar Sunset' and Kathryn Scorah's 'Ribbon of Light' reached the 3rd round

Warwick 2005 – The PAGB Inter-Club Slide Championships

A party of nine members went to Warwick on Saturday July 9th, and are pleased to report a pretty good result.
After the first round of eight slides Southport Ps had scored 85 and we were placed equal 12th out of the 33 top clubs who were there, representing the very best of their Federations across Britain, covering more than 1100 clubs.
Our next eight slides improved our score with 87, so that we were now lying equal 10th. Only the top eight clubs go into the Final, as we have done on the last two occasions we have been to Warwick. We missed out this time by only four points. No shots from India, nor any portraits scored high, and some of Trevor Davenport’s excellent slides were at least those four points below expectations.
So we were in the ‘Plate’ competition and scored 95 with eight slides, including four new ones. This made us equal runners-up with Paisley Colour PS, and we are very pleased to congratulate South Manchester PS who won the Plate with 97 points. All of us finished ahead of Smethwick PS (94) and Ordnance Survey PS (87) who were last year’s 1st and 2nd clubs in the main competition.
Our top scoring individual slides with 14 out of 15 were ‘Zap Cat Racers’ by Mike Pollitt ARPS, and ‘African Elephant Herd’ by Derek Openshaw ARPS. Other slides which were used and all contributed to the excellent showing were from Trevor Davenport, Fiona Lea, Noel McQueen, Peter Pauwels, Kathryn Scorah, Keith Suddaby and Margaret Suddaby. Our average score out of 15 was 11.875 in the Plate, and 11.12 overall. A score of 12 was hard earned by any society, and others of ours which did so were ‘Hanjar’ by Trevor Davenport (the top scoring portrait of the day), ‘Swallowtail Newly Emerged’ by Fiona Lea, ‘Red Squirrel in Snow’ & ‘Wren on Mossy Stump’ by Derek Openshaw, and ‘Single Sculls’ by Keith Suddaby. ‘The Triathlon Winner’ by Mike Pollitt, ‘End of the Line’ by Kathryn Scorah, and ‘Portrait of a Marriage’ by Keith Suddaby all scored 11, a very respectable score on such a day.
In the main final 2005, we are delighted to report that Wigan 10 won overwhelmingly with 251 points, averaging 12.55 (Christopher Charnock averaged 13 with his four slides in the Final, at the age of 17). Amersham PS and Stokesley PS (remember Sandy Furniss who spoke to us?) were equal 2nd with 232 points, and Southampton PS were 4th with 228 points.
Southport PS have been congratulated by Wigan 10 on our success, and certainly the whole day was very good for the L&CPU.
We are a real presence at the highest level but we do need more ‘award ‘ level slides which will score 11’s and 12’s and more; lots of our members can do it!

Honours are similarly shared over many years, and thanks are due to ‘The South’ for organising this unique
and splendid competition for all the clubs on Merseyside.

Firing on all cylinders

Southport showed that last year's win at the North Cheshire Digital Print Competition was no flash in the pan. We were certainly firing on all cylinders on Wednesday 9th February 2005 when we again took on the best and won.
Competing against the likes of South Manchester, Dumfries and SLIC was never going to be an easy task. But we proved once again a force to be reckoned with.
With 25 clubs competing the number of entries was restricted to four. Mike McNamee had the un-enviable job of judging all the images.
We started with a bang when Mike Pollitt's print "The Docker's Reading Room" scored a maximum mark of twenty out of twenty. Well done, Mike! The next Southport picture was "Dance Devotees" by Marco Pozzi which also achieved maximum marks. Keith Suddaby's "Infant Class" was awarded eighteen. This put us in with an excellent chance of winning if only our last print could score more than 17. In fact, Kathryn Scorah's "End of the Line" was awarded yet another twenty out of twenty!
Mike chose Marco's picture as the best of the night. Fantastic!
We proved that when Southport PS is firing on all cylinders we can reach 0 - 60 in record time!

The following evening saw another long trek to Poynton for the North Cheshire Challenge Trophy where this time we were competing with slides in a knockout competition. Malcolm Kus ARPS EFIAP/b travelled from Cannock to show, once again, why he is one of the best judges on the photographic scene. His skill as a photographer and his sense of humour shone through, as found reasons to eliminate slides in four rounds leaving only five slides from which to choose a winner at the end of the night.
All our slides survived round one. But with Wigan 10 competing against us we were kicking ourselves when the first of ours to bite the dust was Fiona Lea's natural history shot of a lizard in round two. This was quickly followed by Keith Suddaby's "Shipwreck Coast". Round three saw Trevor Davenport's "My Front Door" eliminated. The cull continued in round 4 when "Dryad's Saddle" by Kathryn Scorah was kicked into touch. "Home with Window" by Marco Pozzi was one of only four other slides to make it through to the final round.
The final results saw Wigan 10 beating Leek by the narrowest of margins. Both clubs scoring 20 but with Leek having a slide knocked out in one of the earlier rounds, Wigan 10 were deemed the winners. Southport came a creditable third on 16 points.

Sliding To SuccessAn amazing year for Southport PS within the L&CPU was finished off in style last Saturday (27th November) when we won for the very first time ever the 5 Slide Knockout. This means that this year we have won, or are joint winners with our old friends Wigan 10, every single trophy in the L&CPU! (Not including the AV trophy, for which we don't compete.)
Poynton was the venue for the battle royal. The rules state each club must use 5 slides from different workers plus a reserve (our reserve was "White Tulips" by Dianne Owen) and that all images should be "new" to the federation. Malcolm Kus, ARPS EFIAP of Midland Counties was the judge. He brought humour as well as considerable expertise to bear. Eliminating the weaker slides first he still found something positive to say about all the work.
We didn't loose any in the first couple of rounds, but a cull in the third when Mal got ruthless meant we saw Kathryn Scorah's "Dyad's Saddle" and Ron Bartle's "Beach Barbecue" bite the dust. "Shipwreck Coast at Sundown" by Keith Suddaby succumbed in round 4 and a cracking shot by Trevor Daveport entitiled "Sadhu in Nepal" made it through to the 5th. After a short debate Malcolm decided he would go on to select a 6th round which meant he had only 4 slides left from which to choose the overall winner. Amongst his selection was "Miss Malay" by Marco Pozzi. (No mean achievement!)
Our final score of 21, beating Lytham St Anne's P. S. by one mark and Chapel C. C. into third place on 18, means we have our name engraved on all the trophies in the federation along with the year 2004!
We know our strength lies in prints so to win a slide competition is even more exciting. Let's hope that next year we don't let success slide through our fingers!
Kathryn.

A little aside concerned with my winning image:
I subscribe to an internet based monthly competition on a website in Australia and
'Full Steam Ahead' won the June round, just ahead of a chap from Melbourne called Andrew.
After all images have been judged, members can add their comments to the images on show
and below are the comments I had from Andrew followed by my reply to him!
From: Andrew S. (VK2TWO) (vk2two) (Jun 22, 2004 00:35 EST)
This image needs to have the bank straight, the boats and background are not straight, and this is very distracting/offputting. unless the river is on an angle? It also is over sharpened, or the filter applied has had to much take on the image itself, their is no detail in the image? its just a blury mess of dull colour? i understand it won, but these aspects meant it didnt get any of my votes.
From: Mike Pollitt (mikelpollitt) (Jun 22, 2004 01:57 EST)
I'm sorry you didn't vote for my picture Andrew and also very sorry the Judge liked mine more than yours. The 'river' is a canal, that's why they are called 'canal boats' and a lot of the canals in the UK are all sloping. As a motor sport photographer I thought you would have noticed the boat is leaning because it is going round the bend far too fast. I don't see how it can be over sharpened and blurred at the same time though and also we get a hell of a lot of dull, colourless day's here in the North of England. Sorry
I found this rather amusing,
Mike

National Print Championships 2004
Giving the others a chance.
Following our amazing success in this competition last year we knew we had an uphill struggle in order to repeat that tremendous achievement. But we certainly didn't disgrace ourselves!
Our aim as in previous years had been to get through to the final 8. Despite the overall tendency for low marks we did this with ease. We were not alone in suffering a deficit of marks for prints that previously won awards in national and international competitions. Other top clubs were wringing their hands as 10 after 10's were given to some gold medal winning images!

After the first round in which only a couple of 15's were award, the first to "Mother and Son" by Marco Pozzi, we found ourselves in 5th position. Because of a tie for the eighth and last place in the final there were actually nine clubs who went on to this stage of the contest.
Lunch time saw frenzied activity as the prints for the final round were selected and the paperwork was completed. The battle continued in the afternoon but it soon became evident that we were scoring less than other clubs. Thinking we had only come 9th we listened to the results being read out in reverse order and were pleasantly surprised to find out we had actually come 7th.
Smethwick had been on top form - winning the competition easily.
( It's only fair we give other clubs a chance!) Our congratulations go to them.

We had achieved what we had set out to do and returned with increased determination to do even better next year!
Kathryn.
PS: We should have known our luck was out when we looked at the catalogue, the organisers had missed us off the list of clubs taking part - US, THE DEFENDING CHAMPIONS - we had to pencil SPS in at the bottom!!!!!!

Southport PS win the Inter-Merseyside Competition - Again!

The Final evening was judged by Christine Widdall at South Liverpool PS on Thursday May 19th, when Southport PS was represented by
Deirdre Frost and Dianne Owen. They were delighted to receive the winners’ trophy, and also the cup for the best slide.

Results from all the nine judging evenings are as follows:-
1st Southport PS 1235 points
2nd South Liverpool PS 1198 “
3rd Hoylake PS 1135 “
4th Birkenhead PA 1119 “
5th Heswall PS 1109 “
6th St Helens PS 1085 “
7th Crosby CC 1073 “
8th Halton PS 979 “
9th Maghull PS 903 “

Best Print with 167 points was ‘Brown Hare’ by Penny Boyd of South Liverpool PS.
2nd - 166pts ‘In the Doorway’ by Marco Pozzi of Southport PS
3rd - 165pts ‘End of the Line’ by Kathryn Scorah Southport PS

Best Slide with 162 points was ‘Ottovalena Girl’ by Marco Pozzi of Southport PS
2nd - 160pts ‘Holy Man’ By Trevor Davenport Southport PS
3rd - 159pts ‘Emerald Damselfly’ by Eric Garnett of South Liverpool PS

Southport’s eight entries averaged 17.11 points out of 20 from the nine separate judges, an average only exceeded
twice by our club since the competition began. Our other entries were from Fiona Lea, Ian Little, and Keith Suddaby.
Over the past four years Southport PS has won twice, and South Liverpool PS twice.

Sliding To Success

An amazing year for Southport PS within the L&CPU was finished off in style last Saturday (27th November) when we won for the very first time ever the 5 Slide Knockout.

Kathryn

A little aside concerned with my winning image:
I subscribe to an internet based
monthly competition on a website in Australia and
'Full Steam Ahead' won the June round, just ahead of a chap from Melbourne called Andrew.
