THE COMPETITIONS
(2010/2011 Season)
**Please read in full and note changes since last season**
General
The dates and closing dates for all competitions are shown in the syllabus. Members
must include their contact details on the packaging of all internal competition entries.
The Championship Competitions
On each Championship Evening there are separate competitions for each league
(see "Classification") for prints and digital projected images (DPI). Marks awarded in
the competitions are used to determine the winners of the Annual Championship
Awards for Prints and DPI. The subject matter of the work entered is entirely open to
the entrant.
Other Competitions
The Specific Competitions
There are six specific competitions as follows:- Landscape, Portrait, Documentary
(excluding Natural History), Natural History, Chosen Subject and Theme Panel. The
subject for the Chosen Subject Competition is shown in the syllabus. These
competitions are open to all members irrespective of their leagues. Entries are not
divided into leagues and prints and DPI are judged together; slides are not eligible. The photographer who gains the highest total marks over all the specific
competitions will be named "Best All-Round Photographer of the Year".
Monochrome Competition
An annual Monochrome Competition in which all entries will be judged together and
not divided into leagues.
Creative Digital Imaging Competition
This competition is for creative images not previously used. All entries will be judged
together and not divided into leagues.
Audio Visual Competition
This competition is for digital audio visual sequences. The entry forms required for
this competition will be available a week or two before the closing date.
CLASSIFICATION
In the Championship Competitions there will be two leagues, 'A' and 'B' for both
prints and digital projected images. Membership of these will be decided by the
Internal Competition Organiser on the basis of previous performance. The new
leagues will be posted at the beginning of the new season. Members can request a
review by the Classification Sub-Committee. New members can join in the
competitions at any time, and their placing will be assessed by the Internal
Competition Organiser.
COMPETITION RULES
1) Copyright.
The photographer must have taken the images submitted and have
the full copyright of all elements of the image at their disposal. Digital images are
welcome in competitions, provided the photographer carried out all the manipulation
and that the photographer took the original exposure(s). Images constructed from so
called Royalty Free and Copyright Free Images are not acceptable.
2) Eligibility.
A picture may be used ONCE in the Championship Competitions,
ONCE in the Theme Panel Competition and ONCE in ONE of the other Specific
Competitions. A picture that is so similar as to be almost identical to one already
used is considered to be the same picture even if the medium is changed.
3) Number of Entries.
You may enter both the Print and DPI Championship
competitions for your league; a maximum of two pieces of work in each. In each
Specific competition, except the Theme Panel competition, you may enter up to two
pieces of work in total, whether prints or DPI, in any combination. In the Theme
Panel Competition you may enter two themed panels, each of three prints or three
DPI. In the Monochrome and Creative Digital competitions you may enter up to two
pieces of work in total, whether prints or DPI, in any combination.
4) Prints.
Prints may be of any size in any photographic medium, but must be
mounted on standard card which may be of any colour. Mounts must not exceed
50cm X 40cm which is the preferred size. If a smaller mount is used it must not be
less than 38 cm on the longest side. Overall thickness must not exceed 4mm. To
avoid damage to other prints when packed, adhesive tape, Velcro, or similar
materials, must not be exposed on the back of prints and the backing mount must be
the same size as the front window mount (if used).
Identification
Prints are to be identified on the back with the class or competition entered and the
title. The correct orientation of the print should also be indicated where this is not
obvious. The title may also appear on the front of the print. The name and email
address or telephone number of the author must appear on the wrapper or container.
The author's name must NOT appear on the mount.
5) Digital Projected Images (DPI).
DPI must be presented in JPEG format. They
may be submitted to the Internal Competition Organiser by email (see page1 for
address) or on a USB pen drive. The maximum pixel dimensions that can be
accepted are 1400 horizontal and 1050 vertical. If your image is smaller than this in
either dimension you are advised to fill the non-image area with black, dark grey or a
colour of your choice to make the overall dimensions 1400 X 1050 pixels. It is
inadvisable to leave any area not occupied by the image white since this can cause
unacceptable glare.
-: Identification :-
The filename of a DPI should be in the format: “Title.jpg” e.g.“A man and his dog.jpg”.
The software used to run the competition will automatically pick up and display the
title so, for this reason, nothing which might identify the author shall be included in the
filename.
The member's league and email address or telephone number must be marked on
the pen drive if used. They must not be visible on the image itself but may be
included in the metadata associated with it. If images are submitted by email the
member's details should be provided in the accompanying message.
6) The Creative Image Competition
For the creative image competition the
following additional rules apply:
i) Images must be from digital files. ii) Entries should be submitted no later than the ‘Closing Date’ for the competition
shown in the Syllabus.
iii) All images shall be new and not have been previously entered in any of the
Society's internal competitions or exhibitions; used by the Society in external
competitions or entered in external exhibitions.
iv) Prints should be presented
mounted on card up to 50cm x 40cm, there is no minimum size. The title should
appear on the back of each entry, which should also indicate the orientation of
the image. The author's name should only appear on the packaging.
v) Images for digital projection should be presented as jpg files at the standard
image size of 1400 x 1050 pixels, on USB compatible storage media or sent by
email to the Internal Competition Organiser. The Filename should be in the
format "Title.jpg". The author's name and email address or telephone number
should be marked on the pen drive, if used, or provided in the body of the
accompanying email. The author's name should not be visible in the image but
may be included in the metadata associated with it.
vi) In addition to the award winners The Nicky McQueen Trophy will be awarded
at the Judge's discretion.
7) The Audio Visual Competition
i) An individual may enter up to three sequences, but the showing and judging of
more than one sequence per entrant will depend on the time available.
ii) The duration of any sequence must not exceed 12 minutes.
iii) Each sequence should be submitted on its own CD or USB compatible
storage media.
iv) The author's name may appear in the production. (Please note that this is not
permitted in some national and international competitions).
v) The photography and production must be the work of the entrant and declared
collaborators, who must be members of the Society.
vi) Copyright of all work entered must be at the disposal of the entrant. It is the
entrant's responsibility to obtain the necessary licences or permissions to use
material for which they do not hold the rights.
vii) Entry forms and digital sequences must be received by the Internal
Competition Organiser not later than the date shown in the syllabus. Sequences
must be listed in priority order for showing. If the number of sequences shown
has to be restricted under rule 1, the sequence(s) to be shown will be selected in
the order listed.
GUIDANCE FOR COMPETITION ENTRANTS
Rule 2. The word 'Picture' in this rule refers to that which is seen by the viewer. For
example: a print and DPI made from the same original would probably be considered
the same unless different digital and/or darkroom manipulation made the image look
significantly different from the version already used. If in doubt consult the
Competition Organiser.
Rule 4. This rule is included for purely practical reasons and to ensure that prints
can be used for L&CPU and PAGB competitions. Mounts that are too small, too large
or too thick or heavy make packing difficult, impracticable or expensive. Damage to
other work can be caused in a number of ways, the most common being metal or
Velcro hangers and adhesive residues on the back of mounts.
SPECIFIC COMPETITIONS
Landscape.
Landscape is defined as a picture with the earth's surface forming all or
part of it. Buildings, bridges, cities, roads and other works of man are considered
natural parts of landscape but should be shown in context and should not be the only
elements of the picture. Human or animal figures and activities, if present, should be
of secondary interest only and help to show the relationship between man and the
landscape.
Portrait.
May contain the whole or part of one or more persons. If only part of a
figure is shown it must include a substantial part of the head.
Animals by themselves
are not included in this category.
Documentary.
The principal aim is the clear recording of the subject. The title must
identify the subject accurately. Subjects could include man-made objects recorded
as distinctly as possible, architecture, sport, photo-journalism, domesticated animals,
cultivated plants, formal flower arrangements, mounted specimens, museum groups
and other items and activities, provided that each is worthy of good photographic
record. Technical quality is important.
Natural History.
The principal aim is the accurate recording of living creatures and
uncultivated plants shown in their natural habitat, or of geological or other natural
phenomena. Any retouching or processing must not alter the truth of the
photographic statement depicted in the original image. Technical quality is important
and the title must identify the subject accurately. Items included under 'Documentary'
are not allowed.
Theme Panel Competition.
The aim is to explore a theme of the photographer's own
choosing through THREE related photographs, which will be judged as a group of
images. The three photographs may be either prints or DPI but not both. An overall
title should be provided for the three photographs, which should not be individually
titled.
A print entry may be presented as three separately mounted prints or as three
images on a single mount. In the case of separate images you must indicate in which
order they should be displayed.
A DPI entry must be entered as both three separate digital files each 1400 X 1050
and as a single 1400 X 1050 file of the three images as a panel. The 3 files should be
named based on the following convention: T11 Title.jpg, T12 Title.jpg, T13 Title.jpg
where these images represent the first set of images in a member's entry. The
composite file for that entry should be named T10 Title.jpg
Note that the title must be the same for each image in a panel.
OTHER COMPETITIONS
Monochrome Competition.
Normally black and white images should be submitted
for this competition; however black and white images modified by the addition of a
single tone over the entire image are acceptable. Images obtained by toning part of
the image or adding colour to part of the image are not eligible.
The Creative Image Competition.
See ‘additional rules’ detailed in ‘Competition
Rules’ para.6).
Classification Sub-Committee.
Cliff Martin, ARPS, DPAGB, David Wareing and
Arthur Williams CPAGB (Hon. Internal Competition Organiser).
Please contact Arthur Williams if you think you have been allocated to the wrong
